Black Beauty
The Autobiography of a Horse
Black Beauty is told by the horse himself. Born on an English farm and gently broken in, he passes from a kind squire's stable to a succession of owners who are careless, vain or simply poor, ending up as a London cab horse before an unexpected reunion in old age. Along the way he befriends the spirited mare Ginger and watches what fashion and ignorance do to animals, from the bearing rein to overwork on wet cobbles. Anna Sewell, an invalid for most of her life, wrote the book to teach kindness to horses and died a few months after it appeared in 1877. It was her only novel, and its plain, patient voice has kept it in print ever since. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
