Fairy dreams

by Jane G. Austin

About 1 h 45 min of reading6 chapters

Six fairy tales in the German manner by an American writer: a prince who dreams of a flower he cannot name and sets out to find it, a king's bride, a gray cat and the cave of the winds, a frost maiden, a journey under the sea and a castle on a cliff. Jane G. Austin, a Massachusetts author later known for historical novels about the Pilgrims, published the collection in 1859 with the subtitle Wanderings in Elf-Land. The stories are longer and more leisurely than the Grimms', full of enchanted gardens, hunchbacked counselors and quests that take years, and they were meant to be read aloud to children in the evenings. The tales are available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first one is free.
