Grimms' Fairy Tales

by Jacob Grimm

About 6 h 44 min of reading62 chapters

Sixty-two tales from the collection that Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm began publishing in 1812, gathered from storytellers and manuscripts in the German lands and reworked over forty years. The best known are here: Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel, Rumpelstiltskin, Briar Rose, Little Red-Cap, the Frog-Prince, the Fisherman and his Wife, the Golden Goose, the Elves and the Shoemaker, and Snowdrop, which is Snow White under the name the early English translators gave her. Alongside them are less familiar stories of clever and foolish peasants, talking animals, enchanted princes and bargains with the devil. The tales are short, matter-of-fact about violence and reward, and were meant for adults as much as children. This English edition descends from the nineteenth-century translations that first brought them to Britain. Read it online in your browser on Vinteuil; the first tale is free.
