The Tale of Peter Rabbit
Old Mrs. Rabbit warns her four children to stay out of Mr. McGregor's garden, where their father met his end in a pie. Flopsy, Mopsy and Cotton-tail obey; Peter does not, and the tale follows him through the lettuces and French beans, under the gate and into a watering can, losing his shoes and his new blue jacket along the way. Beatrix Potter wrote the story in 1893 in a letter to a sick child, printed it privately in 1901 and saw it published by Frederick Warne the following year. It is very short and very exact, and its mixture of real danger and dry humor set the pattern for the twenty-two little books that followed. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the opening is free.
