The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle
The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, published in 1905, is the story of Lucie, a little girl from a farm called Little-town, who keeps losing her pocket handkerchiefs. Searching for them on the hillside above the farm, she finds a tiny door in the fell and, behind it, a kitchen where a short, stout washerwoman in a prickly cap is ironing the clothes of the creatures of the district, from Squirrel Nutkin's red coat to the woolly coats of lambs. Beatrix Potter set the tale in the Newlands Valley near Keswick, gave the heroine the name of a real child she knew there, and modeled the laundress on her own pet hedgehog. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the opening pages free.
