The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck
The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck, published by Beatrix Potter in 1908, is set on Hill Top, the farm she had bought in the Lake District, and several of the people and animals in it were real. Jemima, a farmyard duck who is never allowed to hatch her own eggs, flies off to find a nesting place in the woods and meets a gentleman with sandy whiskers who kindly offers her the use of his summer house, which is full of feathers. The reader sees what Jemima does not, and it falls to the collie Kep and two foxhound puppies to settle matters. The story is a farmyard version of Little Red Riding Hood, told with Potter's dry economy. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the opening pages are free.
