The Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher

by Beatrix Potter

About 4 min of reading1 chapters

The Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher, published in 1906, follows a frog who lives in a damp little house among the buttercups at the edge of a pond. One rainy day he sets out on a lily-leaf boat to catch a dish of minnows for his friends, and the outing turns into a series of mishaps: a water-beetle nips his toe, a spiny stickleback pricks his fingers, and a large trout nearly makes a meal of him. Beatrix Potter drew the pond from her studies of the Lake District, and her watercolors give the small story its texture. The humor is dry, and the dinner that ends it is roasted grasshopper with ladybird sauce. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the opening pages free.
