The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin

by Beatrix Potter

About 6 min of reading1 chapters

The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin, published by Beatrix Potter in 1903, was her third book. Nutkin and his brother Twinkleberry and all their cousins sail across the lake on little rafts, using their tails as sails, to gather nuts on Owl Island, where Old Brown the owl lives. Each day the squirrels bring the owl a present and ask his leave, and each day Nutkin, instead of working, dances about and taunts Old Brown with riddles, until on the sixth day the owl loses patience. The tale is set on Derwentwater in the Lake District, and it explains, she says, why some squirrels have short tails and why Nutkin is still so rude when asked a riddle. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the opening pages are free.
