Pilgrimage from the Alps to the Tiber

by J. A. Wylie

About 9 h 33 min of reading31 chapters

Pilgrimage from the Alps to the Tiber, published in Edinburgh in 1855, is a travel book with an argument. The Scottish Free Church minister J. A. Wylie crosses the Alps into Piedmont, visits the Waldensian valleys and their Protestant church, and then travels by way of Milan, Lake Garda, Verona, Venice, Padua, Ferrara, Bologna and Florence to Rome. Along the road he describes cathedrals, cities and scenery, but his subtitle states his purpose: to examine the influence of Romanism on trade, justice and knowledge. The closing chapters on commerce, law, education and the priesthood in the Papal States make the case against papal government in the years before Italian unification, from a firmly Protestant point of view. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
