About 5 h 18 min of reading41 chapters

Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc, published in 1896, is the novel Mark Twain spent years researching and considered his most important book. It is presented as the memoir of the Sieur Louis de Conte, Joan's childhood friend from Domremy who became her page and secretary, supposedly translated from an old French manuscript. This first volume follows Joan from her girlhood in a village troubled by war, her visions and her insistence on going to the Dauphin, to the journey through enemy country, her examination by the court and her first command. Twain draws on the trial records and French historians, writing with unusual reverence and with comic relief from the boastful Paladin. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
