New Witnesses for God (Volume 2 of 3)
B. H. Roberts, a leading historian and defender of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, published New Witnesses for God in three volumes, and this second volume of 1909 is devoted to the Book of Mormon. Roberts sets out the circumstances of its coming forth, the testimony of its witnesses and the external and internal evidence he believed supported its claims, answering critics as he goes. He also includes a pronouncing vocabulary of Book of Mormon names. Written as an apologetic work from within the faith, it remains an important statement of how the book was defended in the early twentieth century, and a window on the church's intellectual life at that time. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
