New England and the Bavarian Illuminati
New England and the Bavarian Illuminati, a doctoral dissertation published by Columbia University in 1918, studies a political panic of the early American republic. Vernon Stauffer describes the weakening of the Puritan establishment in Massachusetts and Connecticut after the Revolution, the alarm of the clergy at deism and religious radicalism, and the fevered politics of 1798 to 1800. He then traces the real history of the Bavarian order of the Illuminati, suppressed in 1785, and the legend of its survival that reached New England through the books of Robison and Barruel. The heart of the book follows the Reverend Jedidiah Morse's sermons accusing the order of plotting in America, and the controversy that followed.
