The Narrative of the Surveying Voyages of His Majesty's Ships Adventure and Beagle was published in three volumes in 1839, edited by Robert FitzRoy, and its third volume was Charles Darwin's journal of the Beagle's famous voyage. This first volume is the account by Captain Philip Parker King of the earlier expedition of 1826 to 1830, when the Adventure and the Beagle surveyed the southern coasts of South America. King describes the charting of the Strait of Magellan, Tierra del Fuego and the coasts of Patagonia and Chile, the hardships of weather and isolation, encounters with the Patagonians and Fuegians, and the death of the Beagle's first commander, Pringle Stokes. Appendices and notes by FitzRoy complete the volume. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
