Mythology among the Hebrews and Its Historical Development, published in German in 1876 and translated by Russell Martineau the following year, is an early work of the Hungarian orientalist Ignác Goldziher, who would become a founder of modern Islamic studies. Applying the comparative mythology of Max Müller to the Hebrew Bible, he argues that the patriarchal and heroic narratives of Genesis and Judges preserve traces of a nature mythology of sun, sky, night and storm, and then traces how these myths were transformed, in the course of Israel's history, into the religion of the prophets and finally into monotheism. Goldziher later distanced himself from some of these theories, but the book is a document of early scientific study of the Bible.
