About 1 h 30 min of reading22 chapters

Much Ado About Nothing, written around 1598, is one of Shakespeare's most quoted comedies. Soldiers returning from war are welcomed to the house of Leonato, governor of Messina. The young Claudio falls in love with Leonato's daughter Hero and is to marry her, while Benedick and Beatrice, two confirmed enemies of marriage, conduct a running duel of insults that their friends conspire to turn into love. The villainous Don John stages a deception that makes Claudio denounce Hero at the altar, and the comedy darkens before a bumbling watch led by Constable Dogberry stumbles on the truth. The sparring of Beatrice and Benedick has made the play a model for every witty couple since. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first act is free.
