Memoirs of the life, exile, and conversations of the Emperor Napoleon. (Vol. I)

by Emmanuel de Las Cases

About 9 h 41 min of reading110 chapters

The Count de Las Cases followed Napoleon into exile after Waterloo and spent eighteen months at his side on Saint Helena, writing down day by day what he saw and heard. His record, known in French as the Mémorial de Sainte-Hélène, became a widely influential book about the emperor. This first volume, from an English edition published in London in 1836, covers the return to the Elysée after the defeat, the abdication, the surrender to the British aboard the Bellerophon, the voyage to Saint Helena and the first months on the island. Mixed with the narrative are Napoleon's own reflections on his campaigns, his rivals, medicine, women and much else. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
