Emmanuel de Las Cases

Emmanuel-Auguste-Dieudonné, comte de Las Cases (1766–1842), was a French officer and writer who became Napoleon's companion in exile. A naval officer before the Revolution, he emigrated and lived in London, where he published a successful historical atlas under the name Le Sage. Rallying to Napoleon, he became a chamberlain and member of the Council of State. After Waterloo he followed the emperor to Saint Helena and recorded his conversations daily until he was expelled from the island in 1816. His Mémorial de Sainte-Hélène (1823) became one of the founding texts of the Napoleonic legend.
