About 32 h 39 min of reading133 chapters

The Memoirs of Napoleon Bonaparte by Louis Antoine Fauvelet de Bourrienne were published in 1829 and 1830 and caused a sensation. Bourrienne had been Napoleon's schoolfellow at Brienne and served as his private secretary from 1797 to 1802, through the Italian campaign, Egypt, the coup of Brumaire and the early Consulate, before his dismissal over a financial scandal. He writes from close quarters about Napoleon's habits of work, his temper, his dictation, his relations with Josephine and his family, and the making of the Empire, and he continues the story, from a greater distance, to Waterloo and St. Helena. Historians have questioned his accuracy and his grudges, but the book remains one of the liveliest firsthand accounts, given here complete. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
