Memoir of the Life of Thomas Young, published in 1831, is a brief account of the English physician and scientist written by his friend Hudson Gurney from Young's own notes. Young, born at Milverton in Somerset in 1773, was a prodigy in languages and science who established the wave theory of light, studied the eye and color vision, worked on elasticity and tides, and made the first real progress in deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphs from the Rosetta Stone. Gurney writes modestly, admitting he cannot judge the science, and adds a full catalog of Young's many works and essays.
