Lorenzo de' Medici, the Magnificent (vol. 1 of 2)
Lorenzo de' Medici, the Magnificent, published in German in 1874 and translated by Robert Harrison in 1876, is Alfred von Reumont's biography of the ruler of Florence from 1469 to 1492. This first of two volumes sets the stage: the rise of the Medici bank and of Cosimo the Elder, the government of Florence by faction and favor, the warring states of Italy, Lorenzo's education and marriage, the early years of his rule and the Pazzi conspiracy of 1478, in which his brother Giuliano was murdered beside him in the cathedral. Reumont, a Prussian diplomat who spent much of his life in Italy, worked from archives and letters, and the translator admits the labor of rendering his learned prose.
