Lineage, Life and Labors of José Rizal, Philippine Patriot
Lineage, Life and Labors of José Rizal, published in Manila in 1913, is an early full-length biography of the Philippine national hero by Austin Craig, an American professor at the University of the Philippines. Craig traces Rizal's Chinese and Filipino ancestry, his childhood in Calamba, his studies in Manila, Madrid, Paris and Heidelberg, the writing of Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, the propaganda campaign in Europe, his exile to Dapitan and his execution by the Spanish in 1896. Several of Rizal's poems, his Tagalog folklore collection and his illustrated fable of the monkey and the tortoise are printed in full. The book is written from the viewpoint of the American administration, which claimed Rizal as a forerunner. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
