Austin Craig (1872–1949) was an American historian who spent most of his working life in the Philippines. He arrived in 1904 as a teacher under the American colonial government and became professor of history at the University of the Philippines, where he devoted himself to the life and writings of José Rizal. His Lineage, Life and Labors of José Rizal (1913) was the first full-length biography in English, and he edited and translated Rizal's letters, poems and lesser works, as well as compiling collections of documents on Philippine history. He saw Rizal as a forerunner of the American program of democratic education.
