King Richard III

by William Shakespeare

About 2 h 05 min of reading30 chapters

Richard III, probably written around 1592 or 1593, completes Shakespeare's first cycle of English history plays. Richard, Duke of Gloucester, deformed, witty and wholly without scruple, opens the play by announcing his intention to prove a villain, and then works his way to the throne: he woos Lady Anne over the corpse of the king he has killed, has his brother Clarence murdered in the Tower, removes the young princes and turns on his own allies, until the ghosts of his victims haunt him on the eve of the Battle of Bosworth, where he faces Henry, Earl of Richmond. Richard's dark humor and his asides to the audience make him one of Shakespeare's most compelling roles.
