Julius Caesar
Julius Caesar, written around 1599, is Shakespeare's tragedy of a conspiracy and its consequences. Fearing that Caesar will make himself king, Cassius draws the honorable Brutus into a plot, and on the ides of March the conspirators stab Caesar in the Senate. Brutus justifies the killing to the crowd; then Mark Antony, in the funeral oration that begins "Friends, Romans, countrymen," turns Rome against them. The second half follows the civil war to Philippi, where Brutus and Cassius face the armies of Antony and Octavius and Caesar's ghost keeps its appointment. Shakespeare took his story from Plutarch, and the play's questions about ambition, rhetoric and political murder have made it one of his most frequently taught.
