Jasper Danckaerts was a Dutch member of the Labadists, a small Pietist community, who sailed to America in 1679 with his companion Peter Sluyter to look for land for a settlement. His journal records the voyage and nearly a year of travel through New York, Long Island, New Jersey, the Delaware valley, Maryland and Boston, with sharp comments on the Dutch and English colonists, their churches and their morals, the Native Americans he met, farming, trade and the landscape. It includes his drawing of New York seen from Brooklyn Heights in 1679. This edition, published in 1913 in the series Original Narratives of Early American History, was edited by Bartlett Burleigh James and J. Franklin Jameson. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
