Jasper Danckaerts

Jasper Danckaerts was a Dutch member of the Labadists, a small Pietist community that followed the teachings of the former Jesuit Jean de Labadie. In 1679 he and his companion Peter Sluyter sailed to New York to look for land where the community could settle. His journal of the journey, which records travels through New York, Long Island, New Jersey, the Delaware valley, Maryland and Boston, was rediscovered in the nineteenth century. The Labadists later founded a short-lived settlement at Bohemia Manor in Maryland.
