John Splendid, published in 1898, is a historical novel by the Scottish writer Neil Munro, set in Argyll during the civil wars of the 1640s. The narrator, a young Highland laird returning from service on the Continent, falls in with John McIver, called John Splendid, a charming, boastful, quick-witted soldier of fortune. Together they live through the invasion of Campbell country by the royalist forces of Montrose and the MacDonalds, the burning of Inveraray, the flight of the Marquis of Argyll, and the campaign that ends at Inverlochy. Munro writes with a close knowledge of Highland history and Gaelic speech, and his hero is a memorable mix of bravado and decency.
