Joan and Co.
Joan Fairburne, twenty and in the middle of her first New York season, is bored by all of it, including Dicky Burnett, the Harvard man who has decided she is the girl. A chance encounter, an accident and a bandaged hand push her out of the drawing rooms and into the uptown and downtown worlds of wartime New York, where she discovers that she would rather run something than be courted, and Joan & Co. is born. Frederick Orin Bartlett, a Boston writer of popular fiction, published the novel in 1919. It is a brisk comedy about a rich girl finding work, with the home front of 1917 and 1918 as its background. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
