About 9 h 46 min of reading144 chapters

In the Forbidden Land, published in 1898, is Arnold Henry Savage Landor's account of his attempt in 1897 to reach Lhasa through western Tibet, a country then closed to Europeans. Setting out from the Himalayan border of British India, he crossed high passes into Tibet, losing most of his porters to fear and hardship, and pressed on with two servants until he was taken prisoner. Landor describes the landscape, the people he met, their customs and funeral rites, and the treatment he says he suffered in captivity, and he prints official documents on the affair. Some contemporaries doubted parts of his story, which remains a vivid and disputed travel narrative.
