Arnold Henry Savage Landor (1865–1924) was an English painter, explorer and travel writer, a grandson of the poet Walter Savage Landor. Born in Florence, he trained as a painter and began traveling in his twenties, publishing Alone with the Hairy Ainu after living among the Ainu of northern Japan. In 1897 he tried to reach Lhasa and was captured by the Tibetans, an episode told in In the Forbidden Land. He later reported on the Boxer Rebellion, crossed Africa and South America, and wrote of his journeys in many illustrated books. Some of his claims were doubted by contemporaries, and his career remains colorful and disputed.
