History of the Philippine Islands is the English version of Antonio de Morga's Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas, printed in Mexico in 1609 and translated here by Emma Helen Blair and James Alexander Robertson, editors of the great documentary series on the Philippines. Morga, a lawyer who served in Manila as lieutenant governor and judge from 1595 to 1603, narrates the Spanish conquest and government of the islands from Legazpi onward, the wars with the Dutch and the expeditions to Borneo, Cambodia and the Moluccas, and in a final chapter describes the land, its peoples, their customs and the Chinese and Japanese trade. Appendices add material on Thomas Cavendish and the early Dutch in the East Indies. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
