by George Rawlinson

About 9 h 50 min of reading25 chapters

History of Phoenicia, published in 1889, was George Rawlinson's last work as Camden Professor of Ancient History at Oxford and the first full English account of the Phoenicians for forty years. Thirteen chapters describe the land, climate and people, the cities of Tyre, Sidon, Byblos and Aradus, the colonies from Cyprus to Carthage and Cadiz, architecture, art, manufactures, ships and commerce, mining, religion, dress and social habits, and the alphabet and what survives of the literature. A long final chapter gives the political history from the earliest times through the hegemony of Tyre, subjection to Assyria, Babylon and Persia, the siege by Alexander, and the Greek and Roman periods. Rawlinson draws on the excavations and art history of his day. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
