George Rawlinson (1812–1902) was an English historian and clergyman, Camden Professor of Ancient History at Oxford from 1861 to 1889 and a canon of Canterbury. With his brother Sir Henry Rawlinson, the decipherer of cuneiform, he produced the annotated translation of Herodotus that long remained standard, and his Five Great Monarchies of the Ancient Eastern World, followed by volumes on Parthia and Sassanian Persia, brought the results of Assyrian and Persian archaeology to English readers. History of Phoenicia and Ancient Egypt were among his later works. He also wrote in defense of the historical accuracy of the Bible.
