History of Gujarát
Gazetteer of the Bombay Presidency, Volume I, Part I.
History of Gujarát is the first part of the first volume of the Gazetteer of the Bombay Presidency, compiled under James M. Campbell and printed in 1896. It is a reference history of the region in western India from the earliest records to the coming of British rule. The early chapters reconstruct the Kshatrapa, Gupta and Valabhi dynasties from coins and inscriptions and follow the Hindu kingdoms of Anhilvada; the second part covers Muslim Gujarat under the Ahmedabad sultans, the Mughal governors from Akbar to Aurangzeb, the half century of disorder after 1707 and the Maratha period. Appendices add material on Malwa, Cambay and the Gujarat disturbances. Dense with dates, names and footnotes, it is a scholar's book rather than a narrative. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
