Sir James Macnabb Campbell (1846–1903) was a Scottish administrator in the Indian Civil Service and the compiler of the Gazetteer of the Bombay Presidency. The son of a Glasgow minister, he joined the Bombay service in 1869 and from 1873 devoted more than a decade to the Gazetteer, a survey of the history, geography, peoples and economy of every district of western India that ran to twenty-seven volumes and became a model for similar works elsewhere. He later served as collector of Bombay and chairman of the Bombay plague committee during the epidemic of 1897. His History of Gujarát, the first volume of the Gazetteer, appeared in 1896.
