History of Education
Levi Seeley, professor of pedagogy at the New Jersey State Normal School, published his History of Education in 1899 for the training of teachers, and revised it in 1904. It surveys education from China, India, Persia, the Jews and Egypt through Greece and Rome, the early Church, the monastic and scholastic schools of the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Reformation, then devotes chapters to the great reformers Comenius, Locke, Rousseau, Pestalozzi, Herbart and Froebel, and ends with the development of schools in Europe and the United States. Each chapter closes with a summary and questions, and the book is a compact statement of what American teachers were expected to know. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
