Geronimo's Story of His Life

by Geronimo

About 2 h 23 min of reading100 chapters

In 1905, while he was a prisoner of war at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, the Apache leader Geronimo told the story of his life to S. M. Barrett, a local superintendent of education, with an interpreter translating, and the book was published in 1906. Geronimo describes the origins and customs of the Apaches, his boyhood, the killing of his mother, wife and children by Mexican troops, and the long years of raids and warfare against Mexico and the United States, through his final surrender and imprisonment. He speaks plainly and with dignity, and asks to be allowed to return to his homeland. It is a rare firsthand account from the Apache side. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
