Geronimo (c. 1829–1909), whose Apache name was Goyahkla, was a leader and medicine man of the Bedonkohe band of the Chiricahua Apache. After Mexican troops killed his mother, wife and children in 1858, he spent nearly three decades fighting Mexican and American forces in the borderlands of Arizona, New Mexico and northern Mexico, repeatedly escaping from reservations. He surrendered for the last time to General Nelson Miles in 1886 and spent the rest of his life as a prisoner of war in Florida, Alabama and finally Fort Sill, Oklahoma. There he dictated Geronimo's Story of His Life (1906). He also rode in Theodore Roosevelt's inaugural parade in 1905.
