From Kingdom to Colony
From Kingdom to Colony, published in 1899, is a historical romance of the American Revolution built around the Devereux family of Marblehead, Massachusetts. A prologue traces the family from the Norman Conquest to a May evening in 1639, when a younger son leaves England for the colonies. The main story is set in 1775 and 1776, with Dorothy Devereux, a spirited girl of the seaport, her brother John in the Continental Army, a British officer who becomes something more than an enemy, and George Washington himself passing through the town. Mary Devereux drew on the traditions of her own family, and the book is full of the daily life of a fishing town at war: privateers, smuggled powder, Tory neighbors and the Marblehead regiment. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
