From Edinburgh to India & Burmah

About 7 h 54 min of reading42 chapters

W. G. Burn Murdoch, a Scottish painter who had earlier sailed with a whaling expedition to the Antarctic, set out from Edinburgh in the winter of 1905 for India, arriving in Bombay in time to see the new viceroy, Lord Minto, land, and went on through southern India and Bengal to Burma. From Edinburgh to India and Burmah, published in 1908, is his diary of the journey, by way of London, Spain, Port Said and Aden, written with an artist's attention to color, light, crowds and faces and a traveler's irreverence about officialdom. Twenty-four of his own paintings illustrate the book, and a glossary explains the Indian words. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
