W. G. Burn Murdoch (1862–1939) was a Scottish painter, writer and traveler. Born in Edinburgh and trained there and in Paris, he painted landscapes and portraits and was an early member of the Society of Scottish Artists. In 1892 he sailed as artist with the Dundee whaling expedition to the Antarctic, the first British voyage there in half a century, and described it in From Edinburgh to the Antarctic (1894). Later journeys produced From Edinburgh to India and Burmah (1908) and Modern Whaling and Bear-Hunting (1917), all illustrated with his own paintings. He also wrote and painted on Scottish history and was a keen piper and champion of Highland music.
