Fox's Book of Martyrs

by John Foxe

Or A History of the Lives, Sufferings, and Triumphant Deaths of the Primitive Protestant Martyrs

About 17 h 25 min of reading26 chapters

Fox's Book of Martyrs is a nineteenth-century American compilation built on John Foxe's Actes and Monuments of 1563, the Protestant martyrology that stood beside the Bible in English households for three centuries. It begins with the early Christians under the ten Roman persecutions, passes to the medieval heretics and the Inquisition, and devotes its longest chapters to the burnings in England under Mary Tudor, with the deaths of Latimer, Ridley and Cranmer. To Foxe's material the compilers added later matter: the Huguenots, the Quakers, Protestant missionaries in India and the West Indies, Switzerland in the 1820s and a sketch of the French Revolution. The tone is partisan and the detail unsparing; the book shaped English-speaking Protestant memory for generations. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
