About 4 h 57 min of reading25 chapters

Folk-Tales of Bengal, first published in 1883, was collected by the Reverend Lal Behari Day, a Bengali convert and professor who set down twenty-two stories as he had heard them told by old village women, at the suggestion of the folklorist Richard Carnac Temple. Princes and merchants' sons set out to seek fortune, rakshasas and ghosts beset them, a prince's life is hidden in a necklace, animals speak and the youngest wife is the wisest. Day aimed to give the stories whole, without literary embellishment, and the collection became a standard source for comparative folklore. This edition reproduces the 1912 Macmillan printing with its color illustrations by Warwick Goble. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
