Father Duffy's story
Francis P. Duffy, a Catholic priest from New York, served as chaplain of the 69th New York Infantry, the famous Irish regiment that went to France in the First World War as the 165th Infantry of the Rainbow Division. Father Duffy's Story, published in 1919, follows the men from their armory in New York and their training camps to France, through the Lunéville sector, Champagne, the Ourcq, St. Mihiel and the Argonne, recording life in the trenches, the humor of the soldiers and the deaths of many of them. Full of names, it was written as a memorial to the regiment, and it includes a historical appendix by the poet Joyce Kilmer, who was killed in the war.
