Eric, or Under the Sea is one of the Springdale Stories, a series of moral tales for children by Mrs. S. B. C. Samuels, published in Boston in 1870. Young Eric leaves his home near Hamburg to travel for a year through Europe with his Uncle Charlie and friends, accompanied for a while by a mischievous monkey named Froll. They visit The Hague and other Dutch cities, go down in a diving apparatus to see the world under the sea, and continue to Strasbourg, where Eric is wrongly accused of theft until the real culprit is found. Mixing travel description with lessons on honesty and friendship, it is a typical example of nineteenth-century American juvenile fiction. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
