English Wayfaring Life in the Middle Ages, first published in French in 1884 and in Lucy Toulmin Smith's translation in 1889, is J. J. Jusserand's picture of the people who moved along the roads of fourteenth-century England. A first part describes the roads and bridges themselves, how they were maintained, who traveled and how safe they were. The second part follows the lay wayfarers, herbalists and charlatans, minstrels, jugglers and tumblers, messengers, pedlars and itinerant merchants, outlaws and wandering workmen; the third the religious ones, preaching friars, pardoners and pilgrims bound for Canterbury and overseas. Jusserand built the book from statutes, petitions and court rolls rather than from poets, and an appendix prints many of his documents. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
