Edison: His Life and Inventions is the authorized biography written by Frank Lewis Dyer, Edison's general counsel, and Thomas Commerford Martin, an electrical engineer and editor, published in 1910 while its subject was still at work. It follows Edison from boyhood in Port Huron and years as a wandering telegraph operator through the stock ticker, quadruplex telegraphy, the telephone transmitter, the phonograph, the incandescent lamp and the first central station on Pearl Street, then on to ore milling, cement, motion pictures and the storage battery. Edison supplied reminiscences in his own words. A long technical appendix explains the principal inventions, and a list of his United States patents closes the book. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
