Dramatic Reader for Lower Grades
Dramatic Reader for Lower Grades, by the Chicago educator Florence Holbrook, turns well-known stories into short plays for young children to read aloud in class. The scenes include Little Red Riding-Hood, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Cinderella, the Pied Piper, Mother Goose's party, Little Two-Eyes, the Gingerbread Man and Cornelia and her jewels, along with simple nature plays about birds, trees and the seasons. In a note to the children, Holbrook asks them to speak in the voice they imagine each character would use, and presents dramatic reading as training for the imagination and for sympathy with others. The dialogue is simple and the parts are many. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first play is free.
