Commentary on the Epistle to the Galatians

Commentary on the Epistle to the Galatians is Martin Luther's exposition of the letter in which Paul defends the gospel of grace against those who would bind Gentile converts to the Jewish law. Luther lectured on Galatians several times and called the epistle his own, saying he was wedded to it; the commentary of 1535, from which this version derives, is the fullest statement of his teaching that a person is justified by faith alone and not by works. He goes through the letter verse by verse, turning constantly to the controversies of his own day with Rome and with the radical reformers. This English version is the abridged translation prepared by the Lutheran theologian Theodore Graebner. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
