About 12 h 07 min of reading36 chapters

China under the Empress Dowager, by J. O. P. Bland and Edmund Backhouse, was published in 1910, two years after the death of Tzŭ Hsi (Cixi), who dominated the Qing court for nearly half a century. The authors follow her from her youth and the flight to Jehol through her regencies, the reform movement and coup of 1898, the Boxer rising, the court's exile and return, and her last days. Much of the book rests on Chinese state papers and on the diary of a court official, Ching Shan, which later scholars concluded was forged by Backhouse. It remains a vivid and influential portrait of the late imperial court. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
